3. To Read or Not to Read: Robinson Crusoe

  • Feb 2, 2016 · I read it as an adult. It is one of those classics that is famous for its significance in literary history---not necessarily because it is a great story.

  • I'm looking over a 6th grade book lists for my ds12 and editing out books he's either already read or will gouge out his eyes rather than read. I'm indecisive about Robinson Crusoe. DD read it when she was in 6th grade (or actually followed along while she listened to Librivox). She has told ever...

5. Review for Robinson Crusoe, A Boring Classic - YA Books Central

  • Dec 24, 2011 · Sounds as if Robinson Crusoe has huge potential for a great adventure story, right? Too bad it's such a bore. First, let's consider the style.

  • Do some literary classics become dated? Should such books ever be rewritten in modern English? Should such books ever be abridged? These are questions that my husband and I discussed after I finished reading Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. There is no doubt that Robinson Crusoe is important to literary history. First published in 1719, it is among one of the first novels ever written. It also marked the beginning of realistic fiction, with its success leading to the popularity of castaway novels. ...

  • One of the most interesting but often overlooked passages in Robinson Crusoe is his daily log. However, I found it perplexing that our class was so repulsed by this detailed log of fictional events. Through many research studies, it has been proven that when people lie (like when telling a fictional account), they often give far too much detail in order to convince the reader that they are, in fact, not fallacious. While that most certainly is the case in this book, some find the monotony of Crusoe’s everyday life to sound almost too familiar. Many would consider Robinson Crusoe as an ultimately tedious text, but it is surprising that the current generation dislikes the format of daily logs as they very much enjoy watching “vloggers” that create logs that show the daily details of their lives, just as Crusoe does.
