They are all very similar. Glimmer and Shimmer can be used as adjectives with the suffix -ing (the moon is glimmering/shimmering) or you can say (the moon has a glimmer/shimmer) Glitter is a noun. It can be used as an adjective by adding suffix -y (the floor is glittery) or you can use as a noun (I have some glitter) ☺️

They're all synonyms, basically. The one thing to point out is that glitter is an actual object as well as a descriptive noun like the other two.

Glitter the object is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/glitter

@SairahXO: nothing wrong with "glittering".

A "glimmer" would normally be used to describe a faint light that does not gilltter or sparkle, e.g the light seen under a closed door when a dim light is on in the next room, or a lantern seen from far away. "Glitter" would mean something that catches the light and sparkles. "Shimmer" is where the light is (often rapidly) changing e.g. light reflected off the surface of the sea when there are small waves, or off the surface of a shiny dress which doesn't sparkle.
